Internal combustion engines are among the most fascinating and ingenious machines which, with their invention and continuous development, have positively influenced the industrial and social history during the last century, especially by virtue of the role played as propulsion technology par excellence used in on-road private and commercial transportation. Nowadays, the growing attention towards the de-carbonization opens up new scenarios, but IC engines will continue to have a primary role in multiple sectors: automotive, marine, off- road machinery, mining, oil & gas and rail, power generation, possibly with an increasing use of non-fossil fuels.

The book is organized in monothematic chapters, starting with a presentation of the general and functional characteristics of IC engines, and then dwelling on the details of the fluid exchange processes and the definition of the layout of intake and exhaust systems, obviously including the supercharging mechanisms, and continue with the description of the injection and combustion processes, to conclude with the explanation of the formation, control and reduction of pollutant emissions and radiated noise.

Giancarlo Ferrari was full professor of Internal Combustion Engines for more than 30 years (1980-2012) at Politecnico di Milano, Department of Energy, where he carried on a constant activity of teaching, research and consulting on internal combustion engines. He wrote the first editions of this “Internal Combustion Engine” book and authored several publications on the topics of IC engine combustion, pollutant emissions and noise.

Gianluca D’Errico graduated in 1997 in Mechanical Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, then he achieved a PhD in Energetics in 2001. Since 2016 he is full professor in the field of Fluid Machines and Internal Combustion Engines. His research interests range from fundamental studies, to improve the understanding of the physical and chemical processes occurring in an internal combustion engine, to applied research, aimed at providing computational tools which can help the design of future engines. He is the author of more than 120 publications.

Angelo Onorati graduated in 1989 in Mechanical Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, where he achieved a PhD in Energetics in 1993. In 2004 he become a full professor in the field of Fluid Machines and Internal Combustion Engines at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano. His main research subject is the 1D and CFD modelling of the thermo-fluid dynamic processes occurring in IC engines. He is the author of more than 150 publications. He is involved in the editorial board of the International Journal of Engine Research.
