This textbook provides readers with the fundamental concepts that underlie the study of any problem of structural mechanics in the linear elastic field. The first part is devoted to the analysis of plane assemblages of beams (including frames, which are widely used in various fields of engineering); the problem of buckling of compressed bars is also dealt with. The second part is devoted to three-dimensional solids of any shape, with particular emphasis on beam-like solids subjected to any combination of external loads. The main criteria used in the Allowable Stress Design method for 3D solids are presented. The book is especially conceived for students of various engineering courses, such as civil, building, mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Alberto Taliercio is professor of Structural Mechanics at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. In 1989 he got his PhD in Structural Engineering. From 1998 to 2001 he was ‘Professeur chargé de cours’ at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, France. He authored or co-authored more than 160 scientific papers, mostly dealing with the mechanical behaviour of composite materials, concrete and masonry, and with structural optimization. He currently teaches at the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering of Politecnico di Milano.

Umberto Perego is professor of Structural Mechanics at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, where he obtained his PhD in 1987 and where he developed most of his professional career, with some long stages on study and research at foreign institutions, such as the University of Cape Town, RSA, Brown University, RI, USA, LMT-ENS Cachan, France. He is the author or co-author of about 150 papers, mainly in the field of computational mechanics of materials and structures. He currently teaches at the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering of Politecnico di Milano."
